The RE5R05A is Nissan's Jatco-built 5-speed longitudinal automatic, used from roughly 2002 to 2016 behind the VK56 and VQ40 in the Titan, Armada, Frontier, Xterra, Pathfinder, and in the 350Z/G35. It is a fundamentally stout unit. What kills them is not a weak gearset, it is heat, and specifically the factory radiator-mounted transmission cooler.
The single most important thing a Titan or Frontier owner can understand about this transmission: the OEM cooler is integrated into the radiator's side tank, and when that tank cracks internally, engine coolant and transmission fluid cross-contaminate. This is the notorious "strawberry milkshake" failure. Once coolant gets into the ATF it destroys the clutch friction material fast, and by the time you notice the shift is dying, the damage is done.
The Symptoms Owners Report
- Pink / milky fluid on the dipstick. Coolant intrusion from the radiator cooler. This is a five-alarm emergency, not a wait-and-see.
- Harsh or banging 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Heat-degraded fluid, worn valve body, or early clutch wear.
- Shudder / vibration at highway lockup. Torque converter clutch judder, usually P0744/P0740 territory.
- Overheating on grades or while towing. Undersized OEM cooling; fluid temps climb fast under load.
- Slipping, flaring, or a hard limp mode. Late-stage after coolant contamination or chronic overheating.
- No 4th or 5th gear, stuck in a lower gear. Solenoid or valve body, often P0745 pressure control.
Common Trouble Codes on the RE5R05A
| Code | Meaning | Usual Cause |
|---|---|---|
| P0745 | Line pressure solenoid (PL) malfunction | Pressure control solenoid / valve body |
| P0740 / P0744 | TCC circuit / performance | Converter clutch, fluid, solenoid |
| P0720 | Output speed sensor | Revolution sensor / harness |
| P0731-P0735 | Incorrect gear ratio, gears 1-5 | Clutch slip, low pressure, contamination |
| P1730 / P1701 | Interlock / TCM | Internal fault, limp mode trigger |
These transmissions have no serviceable pan gasket bolts to a filter you can just swap; the filter is inside and the pan uses a reusable design on many years, so a proper service means dropping the pan, inspecting the magnet for clutch material, and refilling with the correct fluid.
Fluid and the Cooler Fix
The RE5R05A uses Nissan Matic-K (later Matic-S is backward compatible on many applications). Do not run a generic Dexron in this box; the shift feel and lockup calibration depend on the correct Nissan-spec friction package. Fluid capacity is roughly 9-10 quarts for a full exchange including the converter and cooler lines.
If you own one of these trucks and plan to keep it, the highest-value preventive move is to bypass or supplement the radiator cooler with a proper external ATF cooler and, on higher-mileage trucks, replace the radiator before it cross-contaminates. A stacked-plate external cooler in front of the condenser drops fluid temps dramatically and is the difference between a transmission that lasts 250,000 miles and one that cooks itself at 130,000.

Repair & Rebuild Cost (2026)
| Job | Typical Cost Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid + filter service | $180 - $300 | Correct Matic-S fluid, pan inspection |
| External cooler install | $180 - $400 | Best preventive spend on these trucks |
| Radiator replacement (cooler fix) | $350 - $700 | Do before contamination, not after |
| Valve body / solenoid | $600 - $1,200 | Common P0745 fix |
| Torque converter replacement | $1,000 - $1,700 | For lockup shudder / P0744 |
| Full rebuild | $2,600 - $3,800 | Higher if coolant-contaminated |
| Reman unit installed | $3,400 - $4,800 | Reman + labor, converter included |
If you catch coolant contamination early enough that the fluid is only slightly pink and it has not been driven far, sometimes a radiator replacement plus two or three flush cycles saves the transmission. Once the fluid is full milkshake and the truck is slipping, budget for a rebuild.

An RE5R05A that failed from coolant contamination is usually a full teardown because the milkshake gets into every clutch pack, the converter, and the cooler lines. In that case a reman unit with a fresh converter and a new radiator plus external cooler is the durable answer. A unit that just has a valve body or solenoid fault with clean fluid is a straightforward part-level repair. Always add the external cooler at the same time, whichever route you take.
FAQ
What is the "strawberry milkshake" problem?
The factory transmission cooler sits inside the radiator side tank. When the tank cracks internally, engine coolant mixes with the ATF, turning it pink and milky and destroying the clutches. It is the number-one cause of RE5R05A failure.
How often should I change the fluid?
Every 30,000-45,000 miles if you tow or wheel the truck, 60,000 at the outside for a light-duty commuter. Heat is the enemy on this transmission.
Is the RE5R05A a good transmission?
Mechanically yes, it is durable when kept cool and clean. Nearly every failure traces back to cooling and contamination rather than a design weakness in the gearset itself.
