What it does

One of three primary shift solenoids in the 6L80. Controls engagement of the 1-2-3-4 clutch pack.

Fitment

2006-2017 GM trucks and SUVs with 6L80 or 6L90 (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Express vans, Camaro SS, Corvette).

Common failure symptoms

P0776, P0894, harsh 1-2 shift, no 3-4 shift, 3-5 reverse drum failure if neglected

Electrical specs

Variable bleed solenoid (VBS).
Resistance: 5-7 ohms.
PWM-controlled by TCM.

Run a resistance check before condemning the solenoid. Bad wiring, corroded harness pins, or a failing PCM driver can cause the same symptoms as a bad solenoid. Eliminate cheap causes first.

Replacement procedure

  1. Drop the 6L80 pan (cheap part, expensive if you skip the pan magnet inspection)
  2. Disconnect the internal harness from the TCM block
  3. Remove the valve body — 24+ bolts of varying lengths, mark each
  4. Locate the 1-2-3-4 solenoid on the lower valve body
  5. Remove the solenoid retaining bracket
  6. Pull straight out — do not pry against the aluminum
  7. Lubricate O-rings with fresh Dexron VI before install
  8. Torque retaining bracket to 89 in-lbs
  9. Reassemble valve body (use a torque sequence — they leak otherwise)

Estimated time: 1 hour for someone who has done this before, 2-3 hours for first-timers. Tools needed: 8mm and 10mm sockets, snap-ring pliers (if removing the valve body), torque wrench, drain pan, fresh ATF.
