If there is one fluid spec people get wrong more than any other, it is Dodge. Chrysler transmissions are extremely picky about fluid. They require ATF+4 (MS-9602), a unique Mopar-developed synthetic, and they do not tolerate Dexron or Mercon in any form. Put a GM or Ford fluid in a 46RE, 47RE, or 545RFE and you will get a shudder and harsh shifts within a few hundred miles, because the friction characteristics of ATF+4 are tuned specifically to the clutch packs in these units. This is not brand snobbery — it is a genuinely different fluid.

One critical exception: the ZF 8-speed (8HP) that came in the 2013-and-up Ram 1500 does NOT take ATF+4. It takes the dedicated ZF 8-speed fluid (ZF Lifeguard 8 / Mopar 8&9-speed ATF). Putting ATF+4 in an 8HP causes shift problems. Every other RFE-family and RE-family Ram transmission takes ATF+4.
The OEM Fluid: Mopar ATF+4
For every RE and RFE Ram transmission, the correct fluid is ATF+4. The factory bottle is Mopar ATF+4. It is a full synthetic and the long drain intervals on these trucks depend on it. Buy genuine Mopar or a fully licensed equivalent — this is one application where we do not recommend cutting corners.

Aftermarket ATF+4 Equivalents That Are Licensed
Chrysler licenses ATF+4 to outside blenders. A licensed fluid carries the MS-9602 spec and is identical in performance to the Mopar bottle. The label must say it meets or is licensed to MS-9602 / ATF+4 — "may be used where ATF+4 is recommended" without a license is not the same thing.

How Much Fluid You Need for a Service
The 68RFE and the older 47RE/48RE hold a lot — 17 quarts dry — but a pan-drop service only pulls 5 to 6 quarts because the converter and lines retain the rest. For a routine drain-and-fill on a Cummins 68RFE, buy 6 quarts. For a full flush, buy a case (12 quarts). For a complete rebuild refill, plan on the full 17. The Cummins diesels run their transmissions hard, so do not stretch service intervals — clean ATF+4 is cheap insurance against a $4,000 rebuild.

Can I use Dexron or a universal ATF in my Ram?
No. RE and RFE Ram transmissions require ATF+4 (MS-9602). A non-licensed universal fluid will cause shudder and shift problems. Use Mopar or a fluid licensed to ATF+4.
Does the 68RFE Cummins take ATF+4?
Yes. The 68RFE takes ATF+4, dry fill around 17 quarts, service refill around 5 to 6 quarts.
What about the 2013+ Ram 1500 8-speed?
The ZF 8HP 8-speed does NOT take ATF+4. It requires ZF 8-speed fluid (ZF Lifeguard 8 / Mopar 8&9-speed ATF). Do not mix them up.
Is synthetic ATF+4 better than conventional?
ATF+4 is a full-synthetic spec by definition. There is no conventional ATF+4 — any fluid licensed to MS-9602 is synthetic.
