ZF 8HP
Transmission Replacement Cost

What it really costs to replace an 8HP45, 8HP70, or 8HP75 in a BMW, Ram, Jeep, Dodge, or Chrysler in 2026 — and why a full replacement is often the wrong first move.

The ZF 8HP is one of the best automatics ever built, which is exactly why the repair bill stings so much when one finally acts up. It is in nearly everything rear-drive from the last decade: BMW (as the GA8HP), Ram 1500 (badged 8HP75), Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler (850RE / 8HP), Dodge Charger and Challenger, Chrysler 300, and plenty of Audi and Land Rover applications. Because it is used so widely, replacement pricing swings hard depending on the badge on the case.

The single most important thing to understand before you spend a dime: most ZF 8HP "failures" are not the gearbox. They are the mechatronic unit, the valve body sleeves, or contaminated fluid causing a shudder. A shop that quotes you a full replacement without pulling a pan and scanning for pressure faults is quoting the easy job, not the right one.

2026 Replacement Cost by Path

There are four real ways to fix a failed 8HP, and they are not close in price. Ranges below are parts plus labor, installed, for a typical independent shop in 2026. Dealers run 30-50% higher.

Repair PathTypical Installed CostBest For
Mechatronic / valve body only$1,400 - $3,200Harsh shifts, limp mode, no mechanical damage
Fluid + sleeve kit (Sonnax)$900 - $1,800Shudder, flare, early pressure loss
Full rebuild (reseal + hard parts)$3,200 - $5,500Burnt clutches, metal in pan
Reman unit installed$4,500 - $7,500Catastrophic failure, high mileage
Used / salvage unit installed$2,200 - $4,000Budget fix, older vehicle

A dealer replacing a Ram 1500 8HP75 with a factory reman routinely lands between $6,500 and $8,500 out the door. The same truck at a good independent, using a quality reman unit, is closer to $5,000. The gap is labor rate and parts markup, not quality of work.

Cost by Vehicle

BMW (GA8HP45 / GA8HP70)

BMW applications carry the highest labor because of tight engine bays, adaptive relearn requirements, and the "lifetime fill" that means nobody ever serviced the fluid. Reman installed at an independent BMW specialist runs $5,500 - $7,500. A mechatronic swap, if that is all it needs, is $2,000 - $3,200 including the ISN coding.

Ram 1500 (8HP75)

The most common 8HP on the road. Reman installed $4,800 - $6,500 at an independent, more at the dealer. The good news: parts availability is excellent and the Ram version rarely needs full replacement — it is usually the valve body or a shudder fix.

Jeep Grand Cherokee / Wrangler (850RE)

Reman installed $4,500 - $6,200. The 850RE is the 8HP badged for Jeep. Watch for TCM software as a first step; a lot of "transmission problems" here are cured with a flash and a proper fluid exchange.

Dodge Charger / Challenger / Chrysler 300

Reman installed $4,200 - $6,000. High-horsepower variants (SRT, Hellcat) run more because they use the heavier 8HP90 and need the correct converter.

Why a Full Replacement Is Usually the Wrong First Move

The 8HP's weak points are well documented, and none of them require a whole new gearbox:

Insist that any shop pull codes and drop the pan before they quote a replacement. If the pan is clean and there is no metal, you are almost certainly looking at a mechatronic or fluid repair, not a $6,000 reman.

DIY Parts to Price First

Before you authorize any big-ticket repair, price the parts a good tech will actually use. If a shop's parts markup looks wild against these, that is your negotiating leverage.

FAQ

Is the ZF 8HP expensive to replace because it is unreliable?

No. It is expensive because it is a sophisticated 8-speed with an integrated mechatronic unit and because it lives in premium vehicles with high labor rates. As gearboxes go, it is one of the most durable ever made when the fluid is serviced.

Can I just swap the mechatronic myself?

Mechanically, yes — it comes out from below with the pan. The catch is coding: BMW units need ISN adaptation and Chrysler units need a TCM relearn. Budget for a scan tool or a mobile programmer.

Is a used 8HP a good deal?

Sometimes. Buy from a yard that guarantees mileage, and budget to replace the mechatronic and fluid regardless. A used case with a fresh valve body is a reasonable middle path on an older vehicle.
