Part numbers and fitment notes below are for reference — always verify against your VIN-decoded transmission code before ordering.

The ZF 8HP is one of the best automatics ever built — smooth, efficient, and behind a huge range of vehicles, from BMW and Audi to the Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger, and Maserati. The catch for a rebuilder is that "8HP" is a family, not a single transmission. An 8HP45 out of a BMW 328i is not the same case as an 8HP70 out of a Ram 1500, and the parts do not cross. Get the variant right first, then order parts.

The good news: the most common failures on these are not full teardowns. The mechatronic sleeve, the bushing, and the lead frame are the usual suspects, and several of those are serviceable without splitting the case.

Identify Your Variant First

The number after "8HP" is the input torque rating in daNm. Higher number, bigger case, bigger clutches. Find the transmission code on the case tag or via VIN before ordering anything.

VariantTorque RatingCommon Vehicles
8HP45450 NmBMW 3/5-series, Audi A4/A5, Chrysler 300, Charger V6
8HP50 / 8HP51500 NmLater BMW, Jeep Cherokee, Wrangler JL (850RE)
8HP70 (845RE)700 NmRam 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Durango, Charger/Challenger
8HP90 (8HP95)900 NmBMW M, Hellcat, Maserati, high-output applications

Note for Mopar owners: ZF licenses the 8HP to FCA/Stellantis, who rebrand it as the 845RE (8HP70) and 850RE (8HP50/51). Parts often cross between ZF and Mopar part numbers but not always — verify.

The Mechatronic — The Heart of the Failure

Most 8HP problems trace to the mechatronic unit: the valve body, solenoids, and electronic control plate in one assembly. The classic failure is the bushing in the mechatronic where the input speed sensor or the pump sleeve rides. When it wears, you get harsh shifts, slipping, limp mode, and codes. A worn sleeve/bushing leaks internal pressure.

The Sleeve Repair Kit

The single most cost-effective 8HP repair is the mechatronic sleeve fix — an oversized bushing/sleeve that restores the worn bore in the mechatronic without replacing the whole unit. Sonnax sells a widely used 8HP sleeve repair kit (look for the ZF8HP sleeve part number). A full mechatronic replacement is $1,500-$2,500; the sleeve kit is a fraction of that and fixes the most common cause.

FAQ

Can the 8HP be rebuilt by an independent shop?

Yes, but find a shop that has done them. The mechatronic requires specific procedures and the fill-and-level process needs a scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature. This is not a transmission to learn on.

Why does my 8HP feel rough only when cold?

Classic worn mechatronic sleeve symptom. Internal pressure leaks past the worn bore until the fluid warms and the clearances tighten up. The sleeve repair kit is the fix.

Is the Mopar 845RE the same as the ZF 8HP70?

Mechanically it is the 8HP70 built under license. Many internal parts cross, but software calibration and a few part numbers differ. Verify by part number, not by family name.
