The ZF 9HP48 — sold by Chrysler as the 948TE — is the transverse nine-speed automatic in the 2014-up Jeep Cherokee KL, Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, Chrysler 200, Fiat 500X, and a range of Land Rover and Honda applications. It was rushed into production and the early calibrations were rough, which is why so many owners remember harsh shifts, hard 1-2 engagement, and the transmission hunting for gears. A lot of that was software, and many cars were cured by a TCM reflash. The mechanical failures are a separate problem and that is what brings a 9HP to the bench.
This unit uses a unique design with two dog clutches in addition to the conventional friction clutches, which is part of why 9th gear rarely engages in normal driving and why the unit is sensitive to wear and fluid condition. Before you tear into one, confirm the exact application and ZF part number, because the 9HP comes in several internal variants and the wrong master kit will not fit.
What Actually Fails on a 9HP48 / 948TE
- Harsh or delayed shifts that turn out to be software. Always rule out a TCM reflash before condemning the transmission. Many early KL Cherokees were fixed by the dealer software update alone. If the latest calibration does not fix it, then you are looking at hardware.
- Clutch pack wear. The B and C clutch packs wear and cause slipping, flare, and gear-ratio codes. On a high-mile or neglected-fluid unit, a full friction and steel set goes in.
- Solenoid and valve body wear. Pressure control solenoid wear shows up as harsh engagement and pressure codes. The valve body and solenoids are a common service point on this transmission.
- Limp mode and gear-ratio codes (P0729-P0736 family). An incorrect-gear-ratio code points at a slipping clutch pack inside, not just a sensor.
- Leaks at the case and pan. The 9HP uses a unique pan and seal arrangement; gaskets and seals go in on any teardown.
The 9HP48 / 948TE Rebuild Parts List
This is what a proper 948TE rebuild includes. A master overhaul kit covers most soft parts; the solenoids, valve body service, and any worn hard parts are separate.
| Part | What It Covers | Replace? |
|---|---|---|
| Master overhaul kit | Frictions, steels, gaskets, seals, sealing rings | Always |
| Clutch friction set (B / C / E packs) | The slipping and flare fix | Always on a slipping unit |
| Solenoid set / valve body service | Pressure control and shift solenoids | Harsh-shift / pressure-code units |
| Filter and pan gasket | Fluid filtration and seal | Always |
| Bushing & bearing kit | Shaft and planetary support | If worn / high-mile |
| ZF-spec 9-speed ATF (approx. 6-7 qt service) | Refill | Always, use the correct ZF spec |
Fluid spec matters more on this transmission than almost any other. The 9HP requires the specific ZF nine-speed automatic transmission fluid (the Chrysler ZF 9-speed fill, not generic ATF+4 in older units). Using the wrong fluid causes exactly the harsh shifting and shudder owners complain about. Confirm the spec for your application and do not substitute.
OEM-Spec Parts vs. Budget Kits
The 9HP is unforgiving of cheap parts. Its dog-clutch design and tight pressure control mean a no-name friction set or a poorly remanufactured solenoid body will give you the same harsh shifting you were trying to cure. Spend on the frictions and the solenoid/valve body service; those are what make this transmission shift cleanly.
Our companion shop gearboxinsider.com stocks OEM-spec 948TE / 9HP48 master kits, friction sets, solenoid components, and filters, and ships same-day before 2pm Eastern with free shipping. Because this unit comes in multiple internal variants, ordering from a shop that matches parts to your application saves you a return.
Tools and Consumables for the Job
- Correct ZF 9-speed ATF — the single most important consumable. Wrong fluid equals harsh shifts.
- Inch-pound torque wrench for the valve body and pan fasteners.
- OBD2 scan tool that reads transmission data — to confirm codes and clear adaptives after the rebuild.
- Snap ring pliers for the clutch retainers.
- Clean fluid funnel and a fluid extractor for the fill, since the 9HP has no traditional dipstick on most applications.

My Jeep Cherokee shifts harshly. Do I need a rebuild?
Not necessarily. The early 9HP / 948TE units were notorious for harsh and hunting shifts that were largely a software problem. Get the latest TCM calibration installed first. Only if a current reflash and a correct-spec fluid service do not fix it should you suspect mechanical wear inside.
What fluid does the 9HP48 / 948TE take?
It requires the specific ZF nine-speed automatic transmission fluid for your application, not generic ATF. Using the wrong fluid is a direct cause of harsh shifting and shudder on this transmission. A service fill is roughly 6-7 quarts; confirm the exact spec for your year and model.
Is the 948TE worth rebuilding?
For a Cherokee, Renegade, or 200 in good condition, rebuilding with quality frictions, a serviced solenoid/valve body, and the correct fluid is usually cheaper than a dealer reman. Because the unit has several internal variants, the key is matching parts to your exact application so it shifts right afterward.
