Ford 6R140
Problems & Repair Cost

The TorqShift behind the 6.7L Power Stroke is a heavy-duty six-speed that mostly earns its reputation. But converter shudder, harsh shifts, and heat under load are real. Here is what actually fails and what the fix costs.

The parts we point to are what we would actually put on a 6R140 on the bench, not whatever ranks first in a search.

The 6R140 TorqShift is the six-speed automatic Ford put behind the 6.7L Power Stroke starting in the 2011 F-250 through F-550, plus the 6.2L and 6.8L gas Super Duty trucks. It is a genuinely stout unit: cast-iron center support, a big torque converter, and a fluid capacity north of 17 quarts. Most of them will run past 200,000 miles if the fluid gets changed and the truck is not asked to tow 20,000 pounds up a grade with a chipped tune and a stock cooler.

That "if" is where the failures live. Almost every 6R140 problem traces back to one of three things: heat, deferred fluid service, or a torque converter that was pushed past what it was designed to hold. Understand those and you understand this transmission.

Common 6R140 Symptoms and What Causes Them

Torque Converter Shudder Under Light Throttle

A vibration or shudder felt between roughly 35 and 55 mph under light acceleration, usually when the converter clutch is trying to lock. On the 6R140 this is the single most common complaint. The lockup clutch friction material glazes or the fluid loses its friction modifiers, and the clutch slips instead of locking clean. Fresh Motorcraft MERCON LV and, in some cases, a converter replacement clears it. A tuned diesel making big torque will eat converter clutches faster than stock.

Harsh or Delayed Shifts, Especially 1-2 and 2-3

A bang into gear, a flare, or a hesitation before the shift completes. The usual suspects are the solenoid body (Ford calls it the main control valve body with integrated solenoids) and worn clutch packs. Dirty fluid and a clogged internal filter make it worse. On higher-mileage trucks it can also be the direct clutch or intermediate clutch giving up.

Limp Mode / Failsafe (Stuck in One Gear)

The truck drops to a single gear and the wrench light comes on. The 6R140 goes to failsafe to protect itself when it sees a solenoid fault, a speed sensor disagreement, or overtemp. Pull the codes before you touch anything: a P0715/P0720 points at input/output speed sensors, P07xx solenoid codes point at the valve body, and a P0218 is an overtemp event.

Overheating While Towing

Trans temp climbs past 220-240F pulling a grade. The stock cooling is adequate for a stock truck but marginal for heavy, sustained towing. Sustained heat cooks the fluid, which then causes the shudder and harsh-shift complaints above. An auxiliary cooler is the cheapest insurance you can buy for this transmission.

Leaks at the Pan and Rear Output

The molded pan gasket and the rear output shaft seal are the common weep points. Not catastrophic, but a low fluid level on a unit that holds 17+ quarts will show up as shudder and slipping fast.

6R140 Repair and Rebuild Cost Ranges (USD)

Prices vary by region and by whether you are doing the labor. These are realistic 2026 ranges for a 6.7L Super Duty. Diesel labor runs higher than gas because the transmission comes out the bottom and the exhaust and crossmember are in the way.

RepairDIY Parts CostShop Total (Parts + Labor)
Full fluid & filter service$120 - $200$300 - $500
Solenoid / valve body replacement$350 - $700$900 - $1,600
Torque converter replacement$400 - $900$1,800 - $2,800
Full rebuild (clutches, converter, hard parts)$1,800 - $3,000$3,800 - $5,500
Reman / built replacement unit$3,500 - $6,000$5,500 - $8,500

A stock rebuild that only restores what failed is fine for a work truck. If the truck is tuned or tows heavy, spend the extra on a billet input, upgraded clutches, and a triple-disc converter now rather than doing this job twice.

Parts a DIYer or Shop Needs

What goes on the bench depends on the job. For a service, you need fluid and a filter. For a rebuild, you need a master kit plus whatever hard parts came back damaged.

How to Make a 6R140 Last

FAQ

Is the 6R140 a good transmission?

Yes. For a heavy-duty diesel automatic it is one of the better factory units ever built. Its failures are almost always heat, fluid neglect, or a converter pushed past stock power, not design flaws.

What fluid does the 6R140 take and how much?

Motorcraft MERCON LV. A full drain-and-fill with the converter is roughly 17.5 quarts. A pan-only service is closer to 6-7 quarts.

Can I fix converter shudder without replacing the converter?

Sometimes. A complete fluid exchange with fresh MERCON LV clears mild, early shudder because it restores the friction modifiers. If the clutch material is already glazed, only a converter replacement fixes it for good.

Why is my Super Duty stuck in one gear?

That is failsafe/limp mode. The transmission saw a fault, most often a solenoid, a speed sensor, or an overtemp event. Scan for codes before assuming the worst; many limp-mode events are a $200 sensor, not a rebuild.
