The GM 6T70 and its heavier sibling the 6T75 are the transverse 6-speed automatics behind millions of GM crossovers and sedans: Malibu, Impala, Traverse, Equinox, Buick Enclave and LaCrosse, GMC Acadia, and several Cadillac front-drivers. They are not bad transmissions. They are transmissions with one famous, predictable weak point that turns an otherwise-healthy unit into a no-reverse, no-fifth boat anchor. If you know the pattern, you can fix it before it strands anyone.
The signature failure is the 3-5-R wave plate. Symptoms line up almost every time: the car loses reverse, or loses fifth gear, or throws a P0894 or ratio-error code, sometimes with a bang. Beyond that, the two other repeat offenders are torque converter clutch shudder and pump wear. Diagnose which one you have before you buy a single part.
Common Failures — The 6T70 Pattern
3-5-R Wave Plate (The Big One)
The 3-5-R clutch uses a stamped-steel wave plate that acts as a cushion spring for the clutch pack. GM built it too thin. Under the heat and load of the 3-5-Reverse clutch, it cracks and shatters. When it lets go you lose reverse and fifth gear, usually with a code and sometimes an audible bang. The fix is not just a new OE wave plate, which is the same part that failed. The proper repair is an upgraded, thicker aftermarket wave plate (the Sonnax-style redesign) installed with fresh 3-5-R frictions. Skip the upgrade and you are back inside it.

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder
Like most modern GM automatics, the 6T70 locks the converter clutch early to save fuel, and the lining glazes over time. You feel it as a shudder or light vibration around 40-55 mph under gentle throttle. Catch it with a fluid change early. Once it is glazed, the converter comes out. The shudder also dumps friction material into the fluid, which is what wears the pump and the valve body bores next, so do not ride it.
Pump and Valve Body Wear
The 6T70 pump can wear at the pump rotor and slide, dropping line pressure and causing delayed or soft engagements. Worn valve body bores at the TCC-regulator and pressure-control circuits produce the same soft, slipping shifts. On a full rebuild you address both, often with an upgraded pump and Sonnax valve body correction parts.
What's In a 6T70 Rebuild Kit
Match the kit to the repair. A wave-plate-only fix and a full overhaul are very different parts lists:
- 3-5-R friction plates: the clutch pack that lives next to the failed wave plate; always replace with the wave plate.
- Upgraded wave plate: the thicker redesigned plate, not the OE part; this is the whole point of the repair.
- Full friction set: all clutch pack frictions for a complete overhaul.
- Steel plates: replace any that are blued or scored.
- Seal and gasket kit: all case, piston, and pump seals plus the pan gasket.
- Filter: the internal spin-style filter; cheap and mandatory.
- Pump parts: pump rebuild or upgraded slide/rotor on high-mileage units.
- Sonnax valve body parts: oversized TCC and pressure-control valves for worn bores.
The trap here is the same as always: a bargain "banner kit" is frictions and seals only. If your fluid had debris or you have TCC shudder, budget for the pump and valve body parts up front, because the soft shifts will still be there without them.

Fluid Spec — DEXRON VI, Nothing Else
The 6T70 and 6T75 use DEXRON VI. Not DEXRON III, not a generic import-spec ATF. DEXRON VI is a lower-viscosity, tighter-tolerance fluid, and GM's TCC apply strategy was calibrated around it. Running the wrong fluid is a fast track to the exact TCC shudder people are trying to cure.
GM markets these as extended-fill, but that assumes light duty. In the real world, a fluid and filter change every 45,000-60,000 miles is cheap insurance, and doubly so on the heavy 6T75 crossovers that tow or haul. A drop-and-fill takes roughly 6-7 quarts; a full fluid exchange more. Set the level at the specified fluid temperature, not cold, because these are temperature-sensitive on the fill check.
Check DEXRON VI fluid
| Spec Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Factory fluid | DEXRON VI (GM spec) |
| Service interval | 45,000-60,000 mi for real-world duty |
| Approx fill (drop & fill) | 6-7 quarts |
| Fill method | Level set at specified fluid temp |
Parts Cost Tiers — Rough Real-World Numbers
The wave plate is what makes the 6T70 worth fixing: the failure that kills the transmission is one of the cheaper repairs if you catch it before it grenades other parts.
| Repair | Parts Involved | Rough Parts Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3-5-R wave plate kit | Upgraded plate, 3-5-R frictions, seals | $80-$220 |
| Fluid & filter service | Filter, pan gasket, 6-7 qt DEXRON VI | $120-$260 |
| Valve body / TCC parts | Sonnax valves, TCC correction | $200-$500 |
| Full master rebuild kit | Frictions, steels, seals, filter | $250-$600 |
| Reman torque converter | Rebuilt/new lockup converter | $200-$450 |
A wave-plate repair done as a soft-parts job while the trans is out runs a few hundred in parts. A full shop rebuild lands around $2,000-$3,200, and a reman unit typically $3,000-$4,500 installed. The lesson: fix the wave plate the first time it hiccups, before it takes the pump and valve body with it.

Shop Gearbox Insider →DIY vs Shop — Where the Line Is
The fluid and filter service is fully DIY-able. The wave plate repair is on the edge: it requires pulling the transmission from a transverse platform, which means dropping a subframe or cradle on most of these cars, then splitting the case to reach the 3-5-R clutch pack. If you are comfortable pulling a FWD trans and have a press for the clutch pack, it is doable in a home shop over a weekend.
A full overhaul with pump and valve body work needs proper endplay measurement, clutch clearance specs, and air-checking the circuits. Get the clearances wrong and the shifts will be off. If the car slips across multiple gears or the pan magnet is full of metal, hand it to a builder or buy a reman unit with a warranty rather than guessing.
FAQ
My car lost reverse and fifth gear. Is that the wave plate?
Almost certainly. Loss of reverse and/or fifth, often with a ratio code like P0894 and sometimes a bang, is the textbook 3-5-R wave plate failure on the 6T70/6T75. Do not just replace it with the OE part; install the upgraded plate.
Can I keep driving with the wave plate cracked?
Not wisely. The broken plate sheds debris that circulates through the pump and valve body, turning a cheap clutch job into a full rebuild. Stop driving it and fix it.
Does the 6T70 really need DEXRON VI specifically?
Yes. The TCC apply strategy was calibrated for DEXRON VI. The wrong fluid causes converter shudder and can accelerate wear. Use DEXRON VI only.
