The Nissan Rogue uses a Jatco continuously variable transmission (a JF017E on the larger 2.5L applications, the smaller JF015E on earlier and Sport models). CVTs run a steel push-belt or chain against variable pulleys, and that interface lives or dies on clean, cool fluid. Heat-degraded fluid is the number-one reason a Rogue CVT judders, whines, overheats, or fails early. A fluid change is the cheapest insurance you can buy against a $4,000-plus CVT replacement.
The honest 2026 range: a Rogue CVT fluid change costs $150 to $300 at an independent shop, $250 to $450 at a dealer, and roughly $90 to $160 in fluid if you do a drain-and-fill yourself. The spread is driven by how much of the pricey NS-3 fluid the job uses and whether it is a simple drain-and-fill or a full fluid exchange.
Dealer vs Independent vs DIY — The Real Numbers
| Where / What | Typical Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Independent shop, drain-and-fill | $150 - $300 | ~4.5 qt replaced, level set |
| Nissan dealer, drain-and-fill | $250 - $450 | OEM NS-3, level set to temp |
| Full fluid exchange (machine) | $350 - $600 | Nearly all fluid replaced |
| DIY drain-and-fill | $90 - $160 in fluid | You keep the labor |
NS-3 fluid is expensive — that is most of the cost, not labor. A Rogue CVT drain-and-fill is not a hard job, but the level must be set by fluid temperature at the check plug, which is why some owners pay a shop to do it right rather than risk over- or under-filling.
How Much Fluid Does a Rogue CVT Take?
- Drain-and-fill: you get about 4 to 4.7 quarts out through the drain plug. The pulleys, cooler, and torque converter hold the rest, so a single drain-and-fill replaces only part of the total.
- Total system capacity: roughly 9 to 10 quarts depending on model year and drivetrain.
- Full exchange: plan on 10 to 12 quarts so the machine can push out the old fluid and still leave the correct level.
Because a drain-and-fill only swaps about half the fluid, a common and effective strategy on a neglected Rogue is two or three drain-and-fills a few hundred miles apart. Each one dilutes the old fluid further and gets you close to a full replacement without a risky high-pressure flush.
Use the Right Fluid — NS-3 Only
Nissan CVTs are extremely fluid-specific. The correct fluid for the Rogue CVT is Genuine Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 (earlier models used NS-2). Do not substitute regular ATF, and be careful with "universal CVT" fluids — the wrong friction characteristics can cause judder and premature belt and pulley wear, which is exactly the failure you are trying to prevent. If you use an aftermarket fluid, use one explicitly rated to meet the NS-3 specification.

Change the CVT filter and check the cooler
The Rogue has an internal CVT filter and, on many models, a spin-on external filter and a CVT cooler. If your fluid comes out dark or smells burnt, replace the filter too, and make sure the cooler and its lines are flowing — a restricted cooler is a common cause of CVT overheating on these.

How Often Should You Change Rogue CVT Fluid?
Nissan's printed interval is longer, but real-world reliability on these CVTs is dramatically better when the fluid is changed every 30,000 miles — every 20,000 to 25,000 if you tow, drive in stop-and-go traffic, or live somewhere hot. These transmissions are heat-sensitive, and fluid that looks fine on the dipstick can already be breaking down chemically. Regular changes are the single most effective thing you can do to avoid the well-known Rogue CVT failures.
If your Rogue is already showing early symptoms — shudder on acceleration, a whine that rises with speed, or a burnt smell — do the fluid change now, but read it as a diagnosis. Fresh fluid can quiet an early judder; it will not rebuild a worn belt or pulley.

Is changing the Rogue CVT fluid actually worth it?
Yes, and it is the best money you can spend on one of these. Nissan CVT failures are strongly linked to overheated, degraded fluid. Regular changes are the cheapest way to avoid a replacement that can run $4,000 or more.
Can a fluid change fix a Rogue CVT shudder?
Sometimes, if the shudder is caused by degraded fluid and it is caught early. If the belt or pulleys are already worn, fresh fluid will help temporarily at best. Change the fluid, then reassess.
Can I do a Rogue CVT drain-and-fill myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable setting the fluid level by temperature at the check plug. You need NS-3 spec fluid, a way to reach the check plug, and a scan tool or the temperature procedure to set the level. Overfilling or underfilling a CVT causes its own problems, so get the level right.
Should I flush a high-mileage Rogue CVT?
Avoid an aggressive high-pressure flush on a neglected, high-mileage CVT. Do staged drain-and-fills instead. A power flush can dislodge debris and worsen an already-worn unit.
