700R4/4L60E 4-Pin Planet Set with HD Sun Shell

This is the geartrain package for a 700R4, 4L60 or 4L60E teardown where the reaction sun shell has failed. It includes the complete 4-pin planetary set plus a new heavy-duty sun shell, and the thrust washers and bearings that go with it. Manufacturer part number ER74583K.

The stock sun shell is the known weak point in this family. The splines at the base of the shell strip out or the shell cracks around the hub, and the truck comes in with no reverse and no third gear while first and second still pull. Once the shell lets go it usually takes the sun gear splines and the thrust surfaces with it, which is why replacing the shell alone on a high-mileage unit is a gamble. This set covers the shell and the planets together.

The shell supplied here works with either the bearing style or the washer style front ring gear, so you do not have to identify which version came out of the case before you order. On the bench, pull the input drum and the front planet, check the ring gear style you have, stack the matching thrust washer or bearing, then install the new shell onto the sun gear and reassemble. Set your endplay before the pump goes back in.

Fits GM 700R4, 4L60 and 4L60E four-speed automatics using the 4-pin planetary. Verify pinion count against what you pulled out before ordering, as later 4L65E units use a 5-pin front planet.
