A500 42RH 44RH 42RE 44RE Master Rebuild Kit, Dakota Cherokee

This is a master overhaul kit for the Chrysler A500 four-speed automatic, the TorqueFlite-based unit (an A904 with an add-on overdrive section) used behind the four-, six-, and small V8 engines in late-'80s and '90s Dodge and Jeep trucks. It covers both the hydraulically governed 42RH/44RH and the later electronically governed 42RE/44RE, since the soft parts and clutch material are shared across the family and only the governor and valve-body controls differ.

It fits 1988-1996 Dodge Dakota (2.2/2.5/3.9/5.2L) and Jeep Cherokee (2.5/4.0L) A500 applications. The kit bundles the frictions, hardened steel plates, the overhaul gasket set, and the rubber seals and sealing rings needed to put the unit back together as one package instead of chasing parts piecemeal. It does not include hard parts (drums, pump, or bushings); order an A500 filter and confirm your band condition separately.

On the bench, tear the unit down, clean and inspect the case, drums, and overdrive section, then soak the new frictions in ATF before assembly. Stack each clutch pack and set clearance with the correct selective, reseal the pump and drums with the supplied seals, and set the band adjustment before the pan goes back on.
