Banner overhaul kit for the 2004-up Ford AX4N and 4F50N transaxle: full gasket and seal set plus the friction clutch plates and front band.
This is a banner overhaul kit for the Ford AX4N / 4F50N four-speed front-wheel-drive transaxle, cut for the 2004-and-up build. It covers the soft parts you replace on every teardown - pan gasket, case and pump gaskets, lip seals, sealing rings and O-rings - plus the friction clutch plates and the front band, which is what separates a banner kit from a plain gasket-and-seal set.
The AX4N was badged 4F50N from the early 2000s on and shows up under the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, and the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vans. Late-build units differ from the 1995-1999 castings in clutch stack and drum detail, so a 95-99 kit will leave you short or long on frictions. Check the build date on the case tag before ordering; this kit is the 04-up set.
On the bench, this is the kit you lay out after the case halves are split and the clutch packs are stripped. Soak the new frictions in clean Mercon V for at least fifteen minutes before you stack them, and measure clutch pack clearance with a feeler gauge as you go rather than assuming the new plates match the old stack height. The forward and direct packs are the usual burn victims on a slipping AX4N, and the front band is worth replacing while the unit is open even if the old one still has lining left.
Steel plates and bushings are not part of a banner kit. If your steels are heat-blued or coned, order those separately or step up to a master kit.
