Heavy-duty replacement torque converter for the Ford AXOD-E, AX4S, and AX4N transaxle, with a reinforced turbine hub and remachined pilot and mounting pad.
A heavy-duty replacement torque converter for the Ford AXOD-E, AX4S, and AX4N front-wheel-drive transaxles found behind the 3.0L and 3.8L V6 in the Taurus, Sable, Windstar, Continental, and Cougar. The AXOD-E runs a 23-spline turbine hub; the later AX4S and AX4N use the 25-spline hub this unit is built around, so match your input spline before ordering.
When a converter lets go you usually feel it first as a shudder on lockup, a whine from the bearing at idle in gear, or metal in the pan that traces back to a ballooned or scored hub chewing up the pump. Setting a fresh converter in at rebuild time is far cheaper than pulling the transaxle twice, because a failing converter pushes debris through the whole unit.
This one is remachined and reinforced where these actually fail: the turbine and impeller hubs are strengthened, the pilot and mounting pad are cut back to spec and checked for concentricity, a new bearing is installed, the lockup clutch surface is reburnished, and the finished unit is balanced. Prime it with ATF before installation and seat it fully so it engages both the pump drive and the input shaft before you draw up the bellhousing.
