The 48RE is the four-speed automatic Dodge bolted behind the 5.9L Cummins in the 2003-2007 Ram 2500 and 3500. It is the electronic descendant of the A618 / 47RE, and when it starts slipping in third, flaring on the 1-2, or burning fluid, it is almost always the friction material and the soft parts giving up behind a diesel that makes far more torque than the unit left the factory expecting.
