20-Gallon Parts Washer, Recirculating Solvent Cabinet

This is a floor-standing recirculating parts washer built for the dirty end of a transmission job: soaking and scrubbing cases, valve bodies, pump halves, drums, planets and the bags of hard parts that come off a teardown. The 20-gallon steel tub holds up to 12 gallons of solution, and the electric pump feeds a flow-through nozzle brush at about 2.64 to 3.17 gallons per minute so you have a live stream of clean solvent instead of a bucket of sludge.

The work surface is a 28 in. by 18 in. by 8 in. deep tub, big enough to lay a 4L60E or 4L80E case flat and still work around it. A removable parts tray sits above the solution so small pieces (check balls, springs, snap rings, solenoid bodies) stay corralled and rinse clean without dropping to the bottom. The cabinet is heavy-duty steel with a powder-coated finish, overall 30 in. L x 21 in. W x 34.5 in. H, and it drains through a plug at the base (14 mm x 1.5 mm, 17 mm hex) when it is time to change the solution.

Run it with a water-based degreaser, not straight solvent or fuel, and fill to just below the level of the parts so the pump does not pull air. Warm solution and the recirculating brush cut varnish and clutch material out of drilled passages and bores far faster than a hand brush and a spray can, which is exactly where a lazy cleanup turns into a comeback.
