About this product

This is the Schaeffler LuK TorCon TC0017, a brand-new torque converter for the GM 6L80 and 6L80E six-speed automatic, not a rebuilt core. It fits Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2009-2021), Silverado 2500 HD (2007-2014) and Tahoe (2008-2020), plus GMC Sierra 1500 (2007-2021) and Yukon (2007-2020) running the 5.3L and 6.0L engines. One part number consolidates a stack of older OE converter SKUs, so it covers most 6L80 truck applications with a single unit.

The reason people replace one of these is torque converter clutch shudder: a shake or vibration between roughly 25 and 55 mph as the converter locks up, usually after the factory single-plate clutch and the fluid start breaking down. Instead of the OE single-plate design, the TC0017 uses a multi-plate clutch with Schaeffler friction material, so it holds lockup without the shudder and takes more heat and torque than the stock converter. The redesigned mounting plate resists the cover warping and flexing at the clutch apply surface that kills rebuilt converters, and Schaeffler rates it to outlast a typical rebuild by up to five times.

On the bench this installs like any 6L80 converter. Pre-fill it with a couple quarts of Dexron VI, then seat it fully onto the pump - you should feel it step in and rotate as the hub engages the pump drive and the turbine and stator splines line up. If it sits proud it is not seated, and torquing the bell housing against an unseated converter will damage the front pump. Three M10 x 1.5 mounting bolts are included. Some flexplates use an alternate bolt pattern, so check that the converter pads line up with your flexplate holes before final assembly and use the correct pattern for your truck.

This is a straight fix for a locked-up truck with converter shudder, and it is cheap insurance during a 6L80 rebuild since debris trapped in a used converter will circulate back through a fresh build. The factory TCC tune generally carries over with no reflash needed. New unit, no core charge, ships from the USA.
