TH700-R4/4L60 Friction Clutch Pack, Raybestos RCP96-057

The Raybestos RCP96-057 is the complete friction stack for an early GM 700-R4 / 4L60 overhaul. It is a 22-plate module built specifically for 1985-1987 units that use the first-design reverse input clutch, so it drops straight into the clutch drums you are already tearing down without hunting parts one hub at a time. Raybestos also lists this set under part number 74119A.

The pack covers every clutch in the box: 2 overrun tan frictions, 5 low/reverse tan frictions, 4 first-design reverse-input tan frictions, 5 forward tan frictions, and 6 third/fourth high-energy frictions with hardened cores. The 3-4 clutch is where the early 700-R4 burns up first under load, so the hardened-core high-energy plates in that pack are the parts that actually keep the transmission alive when you put it back to work.

On the bench you air-check each drum, then rebuild the low/reverse, forward, overrun, reverse-input and 3-4 packs to the clearances in your manual, soaking the new frictions in ATF before you stack them so they do not glaze on first apply. Tan frictions like these give smooth, consistent engagement and cut down on the clutch debris that clogs the valve body and cooks the fluid, which is the usual reason a fresh rebuild comes back with a slipping 3-4 or a soft reverse.

Fitment matters here: this module is for 1985-1987 700-R4 / 4L60 cases with the FIRST-design reverse input clutch. Verify your reverse input configuration before ordering, because the later second-design drum uses a different reverse-input count. This is a friction-only set. Steels, seals, gaskets, bushings and the filter are separate, so order your steel pack and overhaul kit alongside it. Made in the USA.
