T5 World Class 5-Speed Bearing & Seal Rebuild Kit BK149

This is a bearing, seal and small-parts rebuild kit for the World Class version of the Borg-Warner (later Tremec) T5 five-speed manual, the box GM and Ford both ran from 1985 on. It is built specifically for World Class units, which use fiber-lined synchro rings on every gear except fifth and are cast with the 13-52 gear count. It does not fit the earlier Non-World-Class T5, which runs all-brass synchros and a different bearing setup, so confirm your transmission is a World Class case before ordering.

The kit carries Japanese-made Nachi and Koyo bearings, the front and rear/tailshaft seals, and the small-parts package the teardown consumes: snap rings, thrust washers and the loose needle bearings. Synchro rings are not included, since most rebuilds either reuse serviceable rings or match new ones to the specific gear, so budget those separately if yours are worn.

On the bench you pull the top cover and tailhousing, slide the mainshaft and cluster gear out, and press the old bearings off the shafts and out of the case. Wash and gauge everything, replace all the bearings and seals, load the geartrain back in with the new thrust washers and needle bearings, then set your bearing preload with the rear retainer shim and check that it turns free with no drag before the cover goes back on.

A high-mile World Class T5 comes apart for the usual reasons: a growl or whine that changes with the clutch, a notchy shift, gear rollout under load, or fluid weeping past a tired tailshaft seal. Fresh bearings and seals quiet it down and take the slop out of the shift.
