Dana 44 Differential Master Overhaul Kit, 30 Spline (ZK D44)

This is the USA Standard Gear master overhaul kit, part number ZK D44, for setting up a Dana 44 differential with a 30-spline carrier. The Dana 44 shows up front and rear under Jeep CJ, YJ, TJ and XJ, Ford Bronco and F-150, Dodge and Chevy half-tons, and plenty of 4x4 swaps, and this is the kit you open when you install a new ring and pinion, drop in a locker or posi carrier, or tear a third member down to chase a howl, a whine on decel, or a leaking pinion seal.

Master (install) kit is the important distinction from a plain bearing kit. Along with the Koyo carrier bearings and races and the Koyo pinion bearings and races, you get the complete shim pack needed to set pinion depth and dial carrier bearing preload and backlash in from scratch, plus a new pinion seal, ring gear bolts, the pinion nut, the crush sleeve where the application uses one, and oil baffles and slingers where applicable. Everything that touches a bearing is new, so you are not putting a fresh gear set behind tired parts.

On the bench: press the pinion race set in square, shim the pinion to the depth etched on the pinion head, then set carrier preload and run backlash in the 0.008 to 0.010 inch range. Paint the gears and read the pattern before the cover gasket goes on, because pulling it back apart later is the expensive way to learn you were a shim off. Note this kit does not include the ring and pinion gears or a carrier; pair it with your gear set, or reuse your gears if the pattern and wear are still good. Fits standard-rotation Dana 44 axles using a 30-spline carrier.
