Bearing, gasket and seal kit for the New Process NP242 full-time transfer case with the 24mm wide input bearing, Jeep and Dodge 4WD.
Complete bearing, gasket and seal set for the New Process 242 transfer case. USA Standard Gear part number ZTBK242. This is the version built around the 24 mm (0.94 in) wide input bearing, so measure the width of your input bearing before you order. NP242 cases were also built with a narrower input bearing and those take a different kit, and the two are not interchangeable.
The NP242 is the full-time chain-drive case that gives you 2WD, 4WD Part Time, Neutral, and 4WD Full Time through a center differential. It shows up behind Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and Wrangler drivetrains and in Dodge 4WD applications. When one of these starts howling in Full Time but goes quiet in Part Time, or you find gear oil running down the back of the case from a hard output seal, the case bearings have usually been running in contaminated fluid long enough that reusing them is a false economy.
Kit contents cover the case bearings plus the gaskets and seals needed to close the unit back up dry. Bench sequence is to drain, split the case halves, lift out the chain and sprockets, then press the old bearings off the input and mainshaft. Drive the new races in square with a proper driver so you do not cock a race in its bore, set the seals flush rather than sunk, and run the case-half fasteners down in a criss-cross pattern. Let the sealer skin before you refill so you are not chasing a weep you created yourself.
