What it does

Engages the torque converter clutch (TCC). When stuck off, you get parasitic loss and overheating. When stuck on, the engine stalls at red lights.

Fitment

1993-2008 GM trucks, SUVs, and cars with 4L60E or 4L65E.

Common failure symptoms

P0742, P0741, torque-converter shudder, no converter lockup, lockup engages with a thud, lockup unlocks erratically at highway speed

Electrical specs

Run a resistance check before condemning the solenoid. Bad wiring, corroded harness pins, or a failing PCM driver can cause the same symptoms as a bad solenoid. Eliminate cheap causes first.

Replacement procedure

1. Drop pan and filter
2. TCC solenoid is mounted to the valve body on the passenger side
3. Disconnect 2-pin harness clip
4. Remove 8mm bolt and retaining clip
5. Pull solenoid straight out
6. Lubricate O-ring with fresh ATF
7. Torque mounting bolt to 8 ft-lbs
8. If symptom is shudder ONLY (not lockup failure), check fluid spec first — wrong ATF causes the same symptom and it is the cheaper diagnosis

Estimated time: 1 hour for someone who has done this before, 2-3 hours for first-timers. Tools needed: 8mm and 10mm sockets, snap-ring pliers (if removing the valve body), torque wrench, drain pan, fresh ATF.
