The Allison 1000 sits behind the Duramax in GM 2500 and 3500 HD pickups from 2001 into the late 2010s, and in a long list of medium-duty trucks, buses and motorhome chassis. It is one of the toughest automatics ever put in a pickup, so when it starts flaring between gears, banging into second, or throwing solenoid and pressure codes, the valve body and solenoids are high on the suspect list.
The catch is that Allison 1000 valve bodies are not one part. They changed several times, and a valve body that looks close enough will not bolt up or will not work with your transmission and TCM. Buying the right one comes down to three things: year range, solenoid count, and feed tube layout.
Identify Your Valve Body
| Years | Configuration | Typical Application | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2001-2003 | 6 solenoids, 1 tube | Early 5-speed, LB7 Duramax era | Reman 2001-2003 |
| 2004-2005 | 7 solenoids, 1 tube | Later 5-speed, LLY Duramax era | Reman 2004-2005 |
| 2006-2009 | 7 solenoids, 2 tubes | 6-speed, LBZ and LMM Duramax era | Reman 2006-2009 |
| 2010-up | 7 solenoids, no tubes | Later 6-speed units | Reman 2010-up |
The fastest way to confirm is to drop the pan and look. Count the solenoids on the valve body and look at whether there are feed tubes between the valve body and the case, and how many. Then compare to the build date on the door sticker. A truck built near a changeover can carry the other version, so the physical check beats the model year.
If your truck runs an Allison 2000-series unit (common in medium-duty and bus applications), the same year and tube breakdown applies, but buy the unit listed for that model.
Reman vs New vs Repair Kit
Remanufactured Valve Body
A quality reman unit has been torn down, cleaned, had worn bores addressed, and been tested. For a truck with high miles, contaminated fluid, or a flare that persists after solenoid replacement, this is the most reliable fix short of a full rebuild. Confirm whether solenoids are included; a reman valve body with your old, tired solenoids bolted back on will not shift like it should.
New Valve Body with Solenoids
A complete assembly with solenoids installed covers a wide year range and removes any question about solenoid condition. It costs more, but it is the one-trip repair.

Valve Body Repair and Shift Kits
If the valve body is otherwise healthy and you are comfortable disassembling it on a clean bench, a repair or shift kit corrects known wear and pressure issues for far less money. This is the route for a rebuild in progress, or for a truck that shifts soft and flares under a load rather than one with metal in the pan.

Symptoms That Point to the Valve Body
- Flare between gears under load, especially once the fluid is hot, that comes back after an adaptive reset.
- Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts that do not improve with a relearn.
- Pressure control solenoid codes or repeated limp mode with good wiring and good solenoid resistance.
- Converter clutch slip codes where the converter tests good.
Symptoms that usually are not the valve body: a no-start in gear, delayed engagement on a cold morning with low fluid, or a single solenoid electrical code. Check the fluid level, filters and wiring first, then test the individual solenoid. A 7-piece solenoid kit or an internal wire harness may be the whole fix.
Install and Relearn — Don't Skip This
- Clean the pan and magnet and look at what is on them. Fine clutch material means the clutches are worn too; a valve body alone will not fix slipping packs.
- Replace both filters: the internal filter in the pan and the external spin-on filter. Allison 1000 Filter Kit · Spin-On Filter
- Torque valve body bolts to spec in sequence. Over-tightened bolts distort the body and cause sticking valves.
- Refill with the correct fluid and check the level hot. TranSynd 668
- Reset the TCM adaptive values with a scan tool that supports Allison, then drive through every gear under light and moderate throttle so it relearns clutch fill times. Skipping the reset is a common reason a new valve body still shifts badly. Heavy-Duty Scan Tool for Allison

How do I know which Allison 1000 valve body I have?
Drop the pan and count the solenoids and feed tubes. 2001-2003 units have 6 solenoids and 1 tube, 2004-2005 have 7 solenoids and 1 tube, 2006-2009 have 7 solenoids and 2 tubes, and 2010-up have 7 solenoids and no tubes. Confirm against the vehicle build date.
Will a 2006-2009 Allison valve body fit a 2011 Duramax?
No. The 2010-up valve body has no feed tubes, while the 2006-2009 version uses two. Buy the valve body that matches your tube layout.
Do I need to reset the TCM after replacing an Allison 1000 valve body?
Yes. Reset the transmission adaptive values with a scan tool that supports Allison, then drive through all gears so the TCM relearns clutch fill. Without it, shifts can stay harsh or flare.
Is a valve body repair kit enough to fix an Allison shift flare?
Often, if the flare is from known valve wear and the fluid is clean. If there is heavy debris in the pan or the flare continues after new solenoids, a remanufactured valve body or a rebuild is the better repair.
Can I replace just one solenoid instead of the valve body?
Yes, when a single solenoid tests bad and the other symptoms point to it. On high-mileage trucks many owners replace the full solenoid set at once since the rest have the same wear.
