The 48RE is the last of the Chrysler hydraulic four-speeds: the same basic A518/A618 design that goes back decades, with a larger input shaft, beefier geartrain parts, and an electronic throttle valve actuator in place of the throttle valve cable, since the common-rail Cummins has no mechanical throttle linkage. Built stock and towed hard, it wears out. Built with the right kit and a few targeted upgrades, it holds up to a lot more than the factory rating.
Most 48RE failures follow the same pattern: heat from towing cooks the fluid, the front band and direct clutch start slipping, and debris goes through the valve body and governor pressure circuit. That tells you what a rebuild needs to address.
Overhaul vs Banner vs Master: What Is in the Box
| Kit Level | Typically Includes | Buy It When |
|---|---|---|
| Overhaul kit | Gaskets, seals, O-rings, sealing rings, piston seals | You are resealing a unit with good frictions, or you are sourcing frictions separately. |
| Banner kit | Everything in the overhaul kit plus a full set of friction plates | The steels and bands measure good and are not discolored. The most common choice for a first-time rebuilder with a healthy core. |
| Master kit | Banner kit plus steel plates, and depending on the kit, a filter, bands, and bushings | The unit failed from heat or slipping. Blued or warped steels and glazed bands are the norm on a towed 48RE, so this is what we recommend for most Cummins trucks. |
Year matters. The 48RE had running changes, so you will see kits split by range, such as the 2003-2007 master kit. Read the tag on the driver side of the case and match the kit to the build, not just the model year of the truck.
The Hard Parts That Usually Need Replacing
A rebuild kit is soft parts. On a high-mileage or towed 48RE you should plan on inspecting, and often replacing, these:
- Front pump: check the bushing, gear pocket wear, and the stator. A scored pump will cost you line pressure no matter how good the frictions are.
- Sun shell: the splines and the tabs where it drives the front sun gear wear and crack. Cheap to replace compared with doing the job twice.
- Bands and struts: replace the front band if it is glazed or thin, and upgrade the anchor and strut while you are there (see below).
- Governor pressure solenoid and sensor: the most common source of erratic shifting and limp mode on these trucks. Replace it during the rebuild rather than reusing a part with 150,000 miles on it.
- Valve body: if the old unit burnt up, the valve body saw the debris. Clean and inspect it at minimum, or use a replacement 48RE valve body.
- Cooler and lines: flush the cooler or replace it. Friction material trapped in the cooler goes straight back into a fresh transmission.
Upgrades That Earn Their Money on a Cummins
Heavy-duty band anchor and strut
The factory front band strut is a weak point under Cummins torque. The PW518AC band anchor and 22717HD strut is an inexpensive fix for band slip and breakage. If you do one upgrade, do this one.
Billet direct clutch piston
The stock direct clutch piston is stamped. A billet direct clutch piston will not flex under high apply pressure and lets you fit more clutch capacity. On a truck with a tune or a heavy trailer, this is money well spent.
Valve body and shift calibration
A TransGo SK 48RE shift kit firms up shifts and shortens overlap so the clutches spend less time slipping. The Sonnax 48RE Zip Kit addresses worn bores and adds the correction valves shops use on high-mileage valve bodies. Pick one approach for the valve body and follow its instructions exactly.
Tools You Will Need on the Bench
- T-1302 direct clutch spring compressor: the direct clutch spring is under serious preload. Do not try this with a pair of C-clamps.
- Overdrive direct clutch spring compressor: for the overdrive unit, which has its own large spring.
- End play gauge bar set: measure input shaft and overdrive end play before teardown and after assembly, then select thrust washers to spec.
- ATSG 48RE manual: clutch clearances, band adjustments, and the check ball locations. Worth it on your first RE unit.
What We Would Buy
For a typical 48RE out of a Cummins truck that towed and started slipping: a year-matched master kit, a front band, the HD anchor and strut, a new governor pressure solenoid, and a thorough cooler flush. Add the billet direct piston if the truck is tuned or pulls more than 12,000 pounds. Inspect the pump and sun shell before you close the case, and fill it with ATF+4 only.
Build It Once
Order the kit, the hard parts, and the upgrade pieces together so the transmission does not sit on the bench waiting on one part. Everything below ships from stock.

What is the difference between a 48RE banner kit and a master kit?
A banner kit is the overhaul kit (gaskets and seals) plus friction plates. A master kit adds steel plates and, depending on the kit, a filter, bands, and bushings. If the old steels are blued or warped, buy the master kit.
Will a 47RE rebuild kit fit a 48RE?
Not reliably. The two share a lot, but the 48RE has different input shaft and geartrain parts and running changes by year. Order a kit listed for the 48RE and your production range.
Do I need special tools to rebuild a 48RE?
At minimum you need a direct clutch spring compressor, an overdrive clutch spring compressor, a dial indicator or end play gauge, and snap ring pliers. The direct clutch spring is under heavy load and should never be compressed with improvised tools.
What fluid goes in a rebuilt 48RE?
ATF+4 meeting Chrysler MS-9602. A dry fill with the torque converter takes roughly 14 to 15 quarts; set the final level on the dipstick at operating temperature.
Is a billet direct clutch piston worth it?
On a stock truck that tows occasionally it is optional. On a tuned Cummins or a truck that regularly pulls heavy trailers, it is one of the most effective upgrades for the 48RE.
