The Equinox went through a few transmission families, and the complaints track closely with which one is in your vehicle. The 2010-2017 cars mostly used the 6T70/6T75 six-speed automatic, a transaxle shared across a lot of GM crossovers that is generally durable but suffers from a couple of well-known wear patterns: a wave plate failure that causes a hard 1-2 or 2-3 shift, and torque converter shudder. The later 2018+ cars moved to newer units and the complaints shifted toward shift quality and software. Knowing your year and engine tells you which playbook applies.
The good news with the 6T70 family is that the most common failures are repairable without a full teardown if caught early. The bad news is that the wave plate failure, when ignored, takes out clutches and turns a moderate repair into a full rebuild. As always, the fluid and the early symptoms tell the story.
Problems By Year
| Years | Common Failure | Typical Cause |
|---|---|---|
| 2010-2013 | Hard shift, slip in 3rd/5th | 3-5-R wave plate failure |
| 2013-2017 | TCC shudder, hesitation | Converter clutch, fluid breakdown |
| 2015-2017 | Limp mode, pressure codes | Pressure control solenoid |
| 2018+ | Harsh or delayed shifts | Software + valve body |
The Failures You Will Actually See
1. Wave Plate Failure — The Classic 6T70 Problem
A sudden hard shift, a loss of 3rd and 5th gear, or a bang into gear on the 6T70/6T75 is very often a broken 3-5-R wave plate. It is a known weak part. The repair requires getting into the transaxle, but it is far cheaper than a full rebuild if you act before the failure damages the clutches. Updated wave plates are available that are stronger than the original.

2. Torque Converter Shudder
A shudder at light throttle, usually 35-55 mph, is the lock-up clutch on the 6T70. Caught early, a full fluid exchange with Dexron-VI can quiet it. Ignored, the converter contaminates the fluid and needs replacement, with a cooler flush at the same time.

3. Pressure Control Solenoid and Limp Mode
Limp mode with pressure-related codes often points at a pressure control solenoid rather than the clutches. This is a serviceable part. Always scan and verify pressure before condemning internal components, because a bad solenoid mimics clutch slip.

What It Costs
| Repair | DIY Parts | Shop Price |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid exchange (early shudder) | $70-$140 | $200-$400 |
| Wave plate repair | $150-$350 parts | $900-$1,500 |
| Torque converter replacement | $200-$450 | $1,300-$1,900 |
| Full rebuild | $1,200-$2,000 (kit + parts) | $3,000-$4,500 |
Rebuild vs Replace
For a hard shift from the wave plate, fix the wave plate, do not rebuild the whole unit, provided you catch it before the clutches are cooked. For shudder, fix the converter and fluid. The point to commit to a full rebuild is hard slipping under load, burnt fluid, or metal in the pan. A properly built 6T70 with the updated wave plate and good frictions is reliable.
A reman makes sense mainly if the case is damaged. For most Equinox owners, repairing the specific failure or rebuilding the original transaxle is the better value.

What is the wave plate failure on the Equinox?
The 3-5-R wave plate in the 6T70/6T75 can crack, causing a hard shift and loss of 3rd and 5th gear. It is the most common Equinox transmission failure.
What fluid does the Equinox transmission take?
Dexron-VI for the 6T70 family. Keep it serviced; the converter shudder is far more common on neglected fluid.
Is the Equinox transmission reliable?
The 6T70 is generally durable apart from the wave plate and converter shudder, both of which are repairable if caught early.
