Replaces the cracked clutch apply pistons and seals in VW 01M four-speed automatics so K1, K2 and B1 hold line pressure again.
This is the piston and sealing-ring set that goes back into a Volkswagen 01M four-speed automatic (also called the 095/096/097 family) during a rebuild. It covers the clutch and brake apply pistons that live in the drum stack: the K1 and K2 forward clutches, the B1 band servo piston, and the reverse pack. These are the parts that convert line pressure into clamping force on the clutch packs, so once the rubber bonded to them hardens and cracks, the clutches stop holding.
The 01M is known for exactly this failure. The car starts with a delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, then picks up a flare between second and third, then eventually drops to limp mode in third gear only. Techs chase solenoids and valve bodies on these, but if the pressure is bleeding past a cracked piston seal, no valve body work will fix it. Pull the drums and you will usually find the piston lip seals glazed and split. Replacing the pistons is the correct repair.
On the bench, the drum stack comes apart after the transmission is split and the pump is removed. Swap each piston into its drum with clean ATF on the lips, walk the seal in with a thin feeler or seal installer so you do not roll a lip, then air-check every circuit through the case passages before the case halves go back together. An air check that holds on K1, K2, B1 and reverse is the confirmation you rebuilt it right.
