Replaces the internal oil filter and pan gasket on the GM 5L40E and 5L50E five-speed automatic used in the Cadillac CTS, SRX, STS and BMW X5.
This is the transmission oil filter and pan gasket for the GM Hydra-Matic 5L40E and 5L50E five-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic. It replaces OEM 24117-510-011 and 96041844 and covers a specific run of GM and BMW applications: BMW X5 3.0 inline-six (2001-2006), Cadillac CTS 3.2 V6 (2003-2004), Cadillac SRX 3.6 V6 and 4.6 V8 (2004-2008), and Cadillac STS 3.6 V6 and 4.6 V8 (2005-2006). BMW ran this same unit as the A5S 360R/390R, so if a shop calls it a GM box in a BMW, this is why.
One thing to sort out before you order: the 5L40E sits behind the lighter engines and the 5L50E is the heavier-duty version that went behind the 4.6 V8 and later 3.6. The filter and pan gasket in this kit service both, but confirm your trans code off the tag or the build sheet rather than guessing by model year, because SRX and STS were built with both.
The filter is inside the bottom pan, so on these you can drop the pan, swap the filter and gasket, and refill without pulling the unit. A clogged or collapsing filter on a high-mileage 5L40E shows up as a delayed engagement when cold, slipping or flaring on the 2-3 shift, or a burnt smell and dark fluid on the dipstick as the pump starves. Any time the pan is off for a fluid service or you are chasing a shift complaint, the filter and a fresh pan gasket go back in together so the pan seals clean and the pump pulls full fluid.
