A240E Transmission Overhaul Seal and Gasket Kit

The A240E is Toyota's four-speed electronically controlled front-wheel-drive transaxle, the automatic behind millions of Corolla and Corona four-cylinder cars and the hydraulic A240 that came before it. It is a simple, tough unit, and most of them do not come apart because a gear failed - they come apart because thirty-year-old rubber quit sealing. This kit is the rubber and paper side of that job: the lip seals, O-rings, sealing rings and gaskets you need to put an A240 or A240E back together once it is on the bench.

Read what this is before you order it. It is an overhaul seal and gasket set, not a master kit. There are no friction plates, no steels, no filter, no bushings and no bands in the box - it is the seal package. If your unit is coming apart for burnt clutches you will want frictions and steels on top of this. If it is coming apart for leaks, delayed engagement, or a soft shift caused by cross-leak past hardened sealing rings, this is the kit that fixes it and you reuse the clutch pack.

On the bench the order is the usual one. Pull the pan and valve body, get the pump out, and replace every lip seal in the pump and every sealing ring on the drums and shafts - the old ones will be square-edged and glazed, which is exactly why the unit lost apply pressure. Roll the new O-rings into their grooves dry, then lube them with ATF, never with grease. Air-check each drum through its feed hole after the pump goes in; a drum that will not hold air with new rings has a cracked piston or a worn bore, and no seal kit fixes that. Finish with new axle seals and a new pan gasket so the car does not come back with a spot on the floor.

Fitment is by transmission, not by badge: any Toyota A240 or A240E four-speed transaxle. Verify the unit tag on the case before ordering, since Toyota used the closely related A245E in later Corollas and the seal package is not the same.
