The AL4 is known for going into limp mode with a fault warning, harsh or flared 2-3 and 3-4 shifts, and slipping once the clutches wear and fluid breaks down. Solenoid and pressure faults are common on this box, so test the valve body and the EPC/modulation solenoids during the rebuild instead of assuming the clutches are the whole story. After disassembly, inspect the drums, bushings and pump for wear, install the new frictions and seals with the pack clearances checked, refill with the correct AL4 fluid, and run the adaptation reset with a scan tool so the TCM relearns the new clutches.
