AMC 20 Differential Master Bearing Kit with Timken Bearings

A complete bearing and seal master kit for the AMC Model 20 axle, the 8-7/8 inch ring gear rear end used under 1976-1986 Jeep CJ5, CJ7, CJ8 Scrambler and full-size Jeep trucks and wagons, plus AMC passenger cars. It is the Motive Gear R20RMKT, built around Timken tapered bearings for the carrier and both pinion positions.

The kit includes the carrier bearings, inner and outer pinion bearings, pinion seal, crush sleeve, pinion nut, carrier and pinion shims, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, and gear marking compound with a brush. That covers everything you replace when setting up new gears or curing a whine, so you are not waiting on a second order halfway through setup.

A growl that changes on and off throttle usually means worn pinion bearings, while a steady hum that follows road speed is often the carrier bearings. On the bench, press the old bearings off, set pinion depth with the supplied shims, crush the sleeve to proper pinion preload, then shim the carrier for backlash and read the pattern with the marking compound before closing the cover. The two-piece AMC 20 axle shafts use a separate hub puller and are not part of this kit.
