This is a master rebuild kit for the Aisin Warner AW55-50SN and its variants (AW55-51SN, AF23, AF33), the transverse 5-speed automatic used across a wide spread of front-drive cars. It fits GM applications like the Chevy Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, Nissan Altima, Maxima and Quest 3.5L, Saab 9-3 and 9-5, Opel/Vauxhall Vectra, and Volvo S40/S60/C70/S80 2.5L. The kit carries the friction clutches, steel plates, the full gasket and rubber seal set, metal-clad seals, sealing rings and O-rings needed to overhaul the unit. On the bench you strip the case, wash and inspect the drums and pistons, then reload each clutch pack with new frictions and steels to the factory clearance before installing the fresh seals and gaskets on reassembly. Soak the new frictions in ATF before you build the packs.
The AW55-50SN is known for solenoid and clutch wear that shows up as flare on the 2-3 shift, harsh or delayed engagement, and slipping once the fluid is hot. Replacing the worn frictions and hardened seals during a full teardown is what restores clean shift quality. This is a soft-parts master kit; hard parts such as the solenoid body, pump and drums are reused from your core and are not included.
