Spreads a Dana 30 through 80 axle housing so the carrier and ring gear lift out without prying, keeping the bearing bores and caps true during a rebuild.
Heavy-duty cast differential housing spreader for Dana axles. It clamps to the housing flanges and, with the center screw, spreads the case a few thousandths so the carrier and ring gear assembly lifts out instead of getting pried past the bearing bores. On reassembly it holds that same controlled spread while you drop the loaded carrier back in and torque the caps.
Fits the full Dana range: 27, 30, 44, 45, 50, 53, 60, 61, 70, 70U, 70HD and 80 series housings. The tool measures 18.11 in (46 cm) long by 14.8 in (37.7 cm) wide and weighs about 38 lb, so it stays put on the bench and does not flex under load.
Prying a carrier out of an unspread housing nicks the bearing bores, rounds the cap register and brinells fresh carrier bearings. A measured spread protects the bores and lets you check and set pinion depth and backlash cleanly, then release tension without disturbing the shims. It is the difference between a rear end that runs quiet and one that whines after a rebuild.
