Complete master overhaul kit for the GM 8.6-inch 10-bolt rear axle used from 1999 through 2008 in the Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche and Express vans. This is the 8.6 that replaced the older 8.5 10-bolt, so check the cover shape and the ring gear diameter before ordering: the 8.6 uses a 12-bolt cover with a flat bottom edge, and the 2009-and-up version uses a different carrier bearing setup that this kit does not cover.
The kit contains Koyo carrier bearings and races, Koyo pinion bearings and races, a new pinion seal, a new crush sleeve, the full pinion and carrier shim pack, the reverse-thread ring gear bolts, the pinion nut, thread locker, and a tube of gear marking compound with a brush. That is the whole consumable list for a bearing and gear job, which means you are not stopping mid-teardown to order a crush sleeve.
On the bench: pull the carrier and press the old bearings off, then set pinion depth with the shim pack and check the pattern with the marking compound before you crush the sleeve. Once the pattern is right, torque the pinion nut in small steps until you land on 14 to 19 in-lb of rotating preload on a used bearing, or 20 to 25 in-lb on a new one. Do not back the nut off to correct an overshoot - you will need a new crush sleeve if you go past preload.
Use this kit when the rear is howling on decel, when you find bearing spall or a scored pinion race on inspection, when you have a leaking pinion seal that has already run the bearings dry, or any time you are installing a new ring and pinion set and need fresh bearings to set it up correctly.
