Best 4R70W / 4R75W
Rebuild Kit in 2026

Ford's rear-wheel-drive four-speed is simple and cheap to rebuild, but only if you order the right year kit and fix the known pressure-loss problems while it is apart.

Rebuilding a 4R70W? Master, banner, and overhaul kits by year, shift kits, bands, and the Sonnax fixes that make these units last.

Covers the 4R70W (1993-2003 F-150, Expedition, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mustang and others) and the 4R70E/4R75W/4R75E that followed from 2004 on. The AODE came before it and shares a lot of internal architecture.

The 4R70W grew out of the old AOD: same Ravigneaux geartrain, but with a wider first gear ratio, electronic controls, and a much stronger build. It is one of the easier automatics to rebuild at home, parts are plentiful, and a properly built unit with a shift kit will outlast the truck. The catch is that these transmissions lose pressure as they wear, and a rebuild that only replaces frictions leaves the root cause in the valve body and pump.

Pre-2004 vs 2004-Up: Get This Right First

Ford made enough internal changes around the 2004 model year (when the 4R75W and 4R70E/4R75E versions came in) that many kits are split into two groups. That is why you will see listings like the 1996-2003 banner kit and the 2004-up banner kit with Raybestos frictions. Go by the transmission ID tag on the case and the vehicle build date, not only the model year on the registration. Mixing years is the most common reason a DIY rebuild ends up with a friction that will not fit or a seal that will not seat.

Kit Levels Compared

KitTypically IncludesBest For
Overhaul kitGaskets, seals, piston seals, sealing ringsA reseal on a unit with good frictions, or a builder buying frictions separately.
Banner kitOverhaul kit plus friction platesA unit that failed from a leak or a single burnt pack with steels that still measure flat and clean.
Master kitBanner kit plus steels, and usually a filter and other service partsA worn, high-mileage unit or one that slipped for a while. The right answer for most rebuilds.
4R75W master kitMaster-level kit specific to the 4R75W2004-up Expedition, F-150, and Panther-platform cars with the 4R75W.

Where These Transmissions Actually Fail

Upgrades Worth Adding

Shift kit

The TransGo SKAODE shift kit covers AODE, 4R70W, and 4R75W from 1991-2008. It firms shifts, shortens clutch overlap, and corrects several factory pressure issues. On a truck that tows or a Mustang or Crown Victoria that gets driven hard, it is the best value upgrade in the whole build.

Valve body correction

If the valve body has high mileage, the Sonnax Sure Cure valve body kit addresses the separator plate and circuit problems that cause harsh engagement and pressure loss. Do not stack it with other valve body kits unless the instructions allow it.

What We Would Buy

For a high-mileage F-150 or Crown Victoria 4R70W that slips on the 2-3 shift: a year-correct master kit, the Kevlar band set, the servo and accumulator piston kit, the Sonnax boost valve kit, and a TransGo SKAODE shift kit. Inspect the pump, flush the cooler, and fill with Mercon V. That build costs less than most shops charge for labor alone and fixes the reasons these units come back.

FAQ

Is a 4R70W rebuild kit the same as a 4R75W kit?

Many parts overlap, but 2004-up units, including the 4R75W, use different parts in several places. Match the kit to your transmission ID tag and build date. Kits are often listed as pre-2004 or 2004-up for this reason.

What fluid does a 4R70W use?

Mercon V is the service fluid for the 4R70W and 4R75W, including early units that originally used Mercon. Do not use Mercon LV or Type F unless your specific application calls for it.

Why did my 4R70W slip again after a rebuild?

The most common reason is uncorrected line pressure loss from a worn pressure regulator boost valve bore or worn servo and accumulator bores. Replacing frictions alone does not fix pressure loss. A boost valve sleeve kit and servo pistons address it.

Should I put a shift kit in a rebuilt 4R70W?

For most trucks and any vehicle that tows, yes. A shift kit shortens clutch overlap, which reduces heat and wear. It does make shifts firmer, which some owners of luxury cars do not want.

Can I rebuild a 4R70W at home?

Yes, it is one of the more approachable automatics. You will need snap ring pliers, a clutch spring compressor, an end play gauge or dial indicator, a lip seal installer kit, and a rebuild manual.
