Replaces the shift, TCC and pressure control solenoids in GM 4T40E and 4T45E transaxles that cause harsh 1-2 shifts and limp mode.
This is a complete shift solenoid set for the GM 4T40E and 4T45E four-speed transaxle, the transverse unit GM ran behind the 2.0L, 2.2L, 2.4L Ecotec and the 3.1L/3.5L/3.8L V6 in a long list of front-drive cars. The kit covers the solenoids that bolt to the valve body inside the pan: the 1-2 and 2-3 shift solenoids, the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid and the pressure control (EPC) solenoid, so you replace the whole electrical side of the valve body in one service instead of chasing them one at a time. These are remanufactured units - they are tested before shipping and may show cosmetic wear on the housings.
Confirmed fitment: 2005 Buick Century 3.1L V6, 2004-2005 Buick LeSabre 3.8L V6, 2004-2005 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L, 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt 2.0L, 2008-2010 Chevrolet HHR 2.0L, 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu 2.2L, 2004 Oldsmobile Alero 2.2L, 2007-2009 Pontiac G5 2.2L, 2006-2010 Pontiac G6 2.4L, 2004-2005 Pontiac Grand Am 2.2L, 2004-2005 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L, 2007-2008 Saturn Aura 3.5L V6, 2005-2007 Saturn Ion 2.0L, 2005 Saturn L300 3.0L V6.
The failure this fixes is the classic 4T40E electrical complaint set. A silted-up 1-2 or 2-3 shift solenoid stops responding to the TCM and you get a hard 1-2 bang, a 2-3 flare, or the transaxle drops to second-gear limp with P0751, P0752, P0753 or P0758 stored. A tired EPC solenoid cannot hold commanded line pressure, so shifts go harsh cold and slip hot. A stuck TCC solenoid gives converter shudder at light throttle around 45 mph, or an engine that stalls coming to a stop because lockup never releases.
On the bench it is a pan-down job with the transaxle in the car. Drain the fluid, drop the pan, pull the filter, unplug the internal harness from each solenoid, unbolt the old solenoids from the valve body and set the new ones in with fresh O-rings seated square in their bores. Torque the retaining bolts evenly so you do not cock a solenoid in its pocket - a pinched or twisted body is the number one reason a new solenoid codes out right after the job. New filter, new pan gasket, fill with DEXRON VI, then clear codes and relearn the shift adapts.
