Dana 44 Clamshell Carrier Bearing Puller Tool

This is a clamshell-style carrier and pinion bearing puller for axle and differential work. Instead of hooking two jaws behind the bearing cone and hoping they stay put, the split collar closes around the bearing and grabs it evenly all the way around, so the forcing screw pulls the cone straight off the carrier journal or pinion shaft without walking or cocking.

The kit is sized for the common truck and off-road axles: Dana 30, 40, 44, 60, 70 and 80, the BorgWarner BW78, the GM 14-bolt, and the Ford 8.8, 9.75 and 10.25 inch rear ends. It includes the forcing screw and puller body, three split clamshell collars for different bearing sizes, a step adapter, and a base stand that keeps the collars organized on the bench.

On the bench: pull the carrier from the housing, pick the collar that matches the bearing, close both halves around the cone with the edge seated behind the rollers, and snug the side screw. Set the forcing screw on the carrier or pinion end (use the adapter to protect the center) and turn it down until the cone breaks loose. The same setup pulls the pinion head bearing when you need to get at the pinion depth shims.

You need this any time you regear, set up a new ring and pinion, change a locker, or replace worn carrier bearings that are whining or showing pitting. Clamshell collars pull bearings you plan to reuse or measure for shims without chewing up the cage, which is where a two-jaw puller usually does damage. Shipping weight is about 32 lb.
