Snap ring work is where a lot of transmission jobs go sideways. A cheap plier with a worn round tip slips off a retaining ring under spring load, the ring goes across the shop, and if you are unlucky it takes a sealing surface or a lip seal with it on the way out. This GEARWRENCH 89701 set is four fixed-joint pliers - 7 in internal and external with .070 in tips, 9 in internal and external with .090 in tips - which covers the ring sizes you actually run into on a bench: clutch pack retainers, drum snap rings, output shaft retainers, pump body rings and the smaller valve body and accumulator rings.

The tips are high carbon steel inserts with a conical profile rather than a plain straight post. That taper is the whole point: it wedges into the ring eye and stays put as you spread or squeeze, so you can hold a compressed clutch pack with one hand and work the ring with the other. The internal pliers have a slim serrated head so they slide down inside a drum or a case bore without fighting the wall, and the external pliers are spring loaded so they open on their own and you can run them one handed.

Handles are dual layer soft grip, and each plier is laser marked internal or external so you are not squinting at jaw direction on a dark bench. The bodies are heat treated forged steel with a black oxide finish, which matters in a shop where tools live in ATF and solvent. The two lengths are there for reach, not just for ring size. The 9 in pliers give you leverage and depth on a deep drum where a 7 in plier bottoms out against the case; the 7 in is what you want in a valve body or around an accumulator where there is no room to swing.
