A dedicated transmission temperature gauge is the cheapest insurance you can put in a truck that tows. Heat is what kills an automatic. Fluid that spends time above roughly 220-240F starts to oxidize and varnish, clutch friction material breaks down, and seals harden. A stock dash gives you nothing to warn you before that damage is already done. This kit reads actual fluid temperature from 80 to 260 degrees Fahrenheit so you can back off, gear down, or let it cool before you cook the clutches.

The gauge is a 2-1/16 inch (52mm) unit with an aluminum housing, black dial, illuminated red needle, and a tinted lens that keeps a blacked-out look when the gauge is off. It uses a stepper motor for a smooth, accurate sweep rather than a jumpy air-core movement. Seven solid backlight colors plus two cycling modes let you match factory dash lighting, and wiring the dimmer lead to the headlight switch drops brightness about 30 percent at night.

Installation is straightforward on the bench or in the driveway. The included 1/8-27 NPT electronic sender threads into a transmission test port, or into a tee spliced into the cooler line if your case has no open port. GM 4L60E/4L80E, Ford, Dodge Ram Cummins, and Allison-equipped trucks all commonly get this sensor plumbed into the line feeding the cooler. Kit includes the sender with bullet connectors, a 2-foot power and sensor harness, gauge visor, mounting bracket, hardware, and instructions. Note that a tee fitting and hose barbs for a cooler-line tap are not included and are a common hardware-store add-on.
