Idemitsu Type M ATF for Mazda units specifying M3 or M5 fluid and the Ford/Mazda FNR5; six one-quart bottles, enough for a full drain-and-fill service.
Type M is the automatic transmission fluid Mazda calls for in a lot of its own-built automatics, and Idemitsu is the company that actually blends it, so this is the same fluid that comes in the Mazda M-V/M-III bottle sold under Idemitsu's label at a lower price per quart. It covers both Mazda Type M5 (M-V) and the older Type M3 (M-III) specifications, and it is the correct fill for the FNR5 five-speed automatic that Ford and Mazda shared. This is Idemitsu part 30040092-75000C020, a case of six one-quart bottles.
The big application is the FNR5 (also badged FN4A-EL/GF4A-EL), the five-speed automatic behind the 2.3 and 2.5 four-cylinder in the 2006-2013 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan and the 2006-up Mazda6, Mazda3, Mazda5, and CX-7. Those units were factory-filled with Mazda M5 fluid, and using a generic Dexron in them is a common cause of harsh or flaring shifts. The older Type M3 spec covers the earlier four-speed Mazda automatics found in the Protege, MPV, and 626. If your dipstick or fill plug calls out Mazda M-V or M-III, this is what goes in.
The FNR5 has no drain plug that empties the converter, so a real fluid change is a drain-and-fill you repeat: pull the pan or suck the fluid out through the dipstick tube, refill the same measured amount, drive it to mix, and repeat two or three times until what comes out looks clean. Six quarts covers a thorough multi-pass service on most of these transmissions, and doing the strainer at the same time is cheap insurance. Bring the unit to the temperature Mazda specifies and set level off the hot marks.
Type M carries the anti-shudder and friction control these transmissions need to lock the converter clutch smoothly; fresh fluid brings back the shift feel that fades as the old fluid oxidizes and darkens. The FNR5 in particular runs hot and is sensitive to worn-out fluid, so keeping clean Type M in it is the simplest way to stay ahead of shudder and slipping. Ships from the USA.
