The 724.0 is a wet dual clutch, and the same fluid that lubricates the gearsets also actuates and cools both clutch packs. That makes fluid condition the single biggest factor in how long the unit lasts. The pattern on a neglected box is familiar: a shudder or judder as the clutch takes up from a stop, a jerk or hard shove on the 1-2 in traffic, and eventually stored faults for clutch adaptation as the control unit runs out of correction range. There is also a separate cooler filter on this design, in the line circuit rather than in the pan, and it is routinely skipped - leave it in place and it keeps feeding debris back into the clutches after you have paid for a service.

Working sequence: level the car, bring the trans to temperature, drain, drop the pan and change the internal filter and gasket, replace the cooler filter and seal in the line, then refill and set the level using the supplied dipstick at the specified fluid temperature with a scan tool watching trans temp. There is no conventional fill tube on these, which is why the dipstick tool matters. A pan service takes roughly five to six of the six liters in the kit.
