About this product

The OTC 4520 is a two-jaw carrier bearing puller built for one job that gives everyone grief on a differential rebuild: getting the side carrier bearings off the case without destroying the case or the bearing. When you change a ring-and-pinion ratio, install a locker or posi unit, or reshim for backlash, the inner and outer carrier bearings have to come off the case so you can add or remove the selective shims behind them. A generic gear puller almost never fits the narrow, shallow pocket behind those bearings. This set is shaped to reach in there and pull straight.

The kit comes as four numbered pieces: the 4520-1 forcing screw and cross block assembly, two 4520-2 puller jaws and pins, the 4520-3 jaw retaining yoke that holds the jaws square on the bearing, and the 4520-4 set of four step plate adapters that center the screw on the end of the case. Spread is 2-5/8 inches on the inner crossbar holes and 3-3/8 inches on the outer holes, reach is 1-5/8 inches, and the forcing screw is a 3/4-16 thread, 6-11/16 inches long, so you can drive it with a breaker bar or an impact. The four step plates cover 15/16 to 1-11/32, 1-1/8 to 1-1/2, 1-1/4 to 1-5/8, and 1-1/8 to 1-3/4 inch diameters.

It fits the axles most shops actually see: GM 8.2, 8.5, 10-bolt and 12-bolt, Ford 8.8 and 9-inch, and a range of Dana carriers. On tight Dana and Spicer cases where the bearing tangs sit in a shallow groove, plan on grinding a thinner profile onto the jaw tips or clamping the jaws close to the base so they bite and stay under the bearing under load, then run the screw with an impact. Do that and it walks stubborn Timken side bearings off without touching the bearing cage, so a good used bearing can be honed and reused.

Everything stores in the included case so the jaws, yoke, pins and step plates stay together between jobs. This is an OTC (Owatonna Tool Company) tool, forged steel where it counts, not a one-use import. Ships from the USA.
