Fluid and filter service kit for the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic in the 986 and 987 Porsche Boxster (1997-2008) and the 987 Cayman (2006-2008). Kit part number 9863074KIT. You get six 1-liter bottles of German-made ATF, the transmission filter, the pan gasket, and a new drain plug with washer. Filter and gasket are FEBI and ELRING, which is what the cars left the factory with.

The Tiptronic S in these cars is a ZF five-speed built on the 5HP19 architecture, and it is a durable unit that gets killed by fluid neglect rather than by load. The symptoms of an overdue service show up in a pattern: a flare or slip on the 2-3 upshift, a delayed or bumpy engagement when you pull it into drive cold, and converter lockup shudder at light throttle in the 40-55 mph range. Those come from oxidized fluid losing its friction characteristics and a filter that has loaded up with clutch material. Catch it at that stage and a fluid service fixes it. Keep driving on it and you are pulling the transaxle.

On the car the sequence is straightforward but tight, because the Boxster is mid-engine and the trans sits behind the engine with limited access from below. Warm the car to get the fluid thin, put it on level stands, pull the drain plug and let it drain fully, then drop the pan and change the filter and gasket. Fit the new drain plug and washer rather than reusing the old one - these seal by crush washer and a reused one weeps. Refill through the fill plug and set the level hot with the engine running, per the temperature spec for the unit. A pan drop takes roughly 5 to 6 liters of the six in the kit, so there is enough to finish and top off.
