Hand-held 12-24V tester that supplies battery power or ground straight from the probe tip, so you can drive a solenoid or shift circuit without jumper wires.
The Power Probe 3 is the tester most drivability and transmission techs reach for first on an electrical complaint. It hooks to the battery with the supplied clips and runs a 20-foot cord, and the thumb switch on the handle sends either battery positive or chassis ground out the probe tip. That means you can back-probe a connector, read the voltage on the LCD, and then power or ground that same wire without cutting in a jumper or building a test lead.
On a transmission job that saves most of the diagnostic time. Pull the case connector on a 4L60E, 4L80E, 6L80 or 5R110 and you can fire each shift solenoid one at a time straight off the probe tip and hear or feel it click, which separates a dead solenoid from a broken wire or a bad TCM driver in a couple of minutes. The same method checks pressure control solenoids, TCC solenoids, neutral safety and range switches, and reverse lamp circuits. Audible circuit monitoring means you can watch the probe by ear while you wiggle a harness, so intermittent opens show up without you staring at a meter.
The head has a digital voltmeter with min/max capture for catching voltage drops during cranking or under load, plus a 4mm standard banana jack with auxiliary ground so you can plug in your own leads for continuity and resistance work. It runs on 12 to 24 VDC systems, which covers passenger cars, light trucks and most medium-duty and equipment applications.
