RE5R05A Master Rebuild Kit with Brake Band and Filter

Master rebuild kit for the Jatco RE5R05A five-speed automatic that Nissan used behind the VQ40DE 4.0L V6 in the Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra. Unlike a basic overhaul kit, this one also includes a new brake band and a new oil filter, so the two items most rebuilders end up ordering separately are already in the box. Transmission part number reference: 31728-97X00.

The kit covers the clutch frictions, steel plates, seals and gaskets needed for a full teardown, plus the band. On the RE5R05A the band is part of what holds overdrive and reverse, and a glazed or thinned band is a common reason a unit still slips after only the clutch packs are replaced. Replacing it with the frictions keeps you from pulling the transmission a second time.

Typical reasons these units come in: slipping or flaring in 4th and 5th, harsh or delayed engagement, and burnt fluid after towing. On Frontier and Pathfinder trucks with the known radiator cooler failure, coolant in the ATF ruins frictions and bonded pistons, and a full overhaul is the only real fix. Flush or replace the cooler and lines before the rebuilt unit goes back in.

On the bench: soak new frictions in fresh ATF before assembly, set clutch pack clearances to the factory service manual as you stack each pack, and install the new filter last before the pan goes on.
