Bolts the Tremec T56 six-speed to the LS1 block in 1998-2002 Camaro Z28 and Firebird, replacing a housing cracked at the bolt bosses.
The aluminum housing that ties the LS1 block to the Tremec T56 six-speed in the 1998-2002 F-body. It carries the starter and the release bearing, and more importantly it sets where the transmission input shaft sits relative to the crank centerline. Replaces GM 12453263 and 92142856, also cataloged as 1386-212-005.
Fitment is the LS1 F-body and the GTO: Camaro Z28 and Z28 SS, coupe and convertible, 1998-2002; Firebird Formula and Trans Am, coupe and convertible, 1998-2002; and Pontiac GTO base coupe 2004-2006. All of those ran the T56 behind an LS engine, so the block bolt pattern and dowel locations carry across.
These rarely wear out - they get damaged. Hard launches and clutch dumps crack the casting around the lower bellhousing bolt bosses and around the starter pocket. The other killer is elongated dowel holes: once the housing shifts on worn dowels the input shaft no longer runs concentric with the crank, and you chew through release bearings, get a chattering or dragging release, and eventually take out the input shaft bearing and the pilot bearing. If you have replaced a release bearing twice on the same car, housing alignment is the thing to check before you buy a third one.
On the bench, bolt the housing to the block dry and dial-indicate the transmission register bore off the crank flange before you hang the transmission. The accepted standard for a T56 is 0.005 in. total indicated runout; past that you need offset dowel pins to pull it back into line. Check it now - it is a ten-minute job on a stand and a transmission-out job once the car is back together. Reuse the original dowel pins only if they are not scored or loose in the block.
