A four-piece bonded piston set for the Aisin U140E (front drive) and U140F (all wheel drive) 4-speed automatic. The kit fits the 2000-2008 Toyota RAV4 2.4L, 2001-2007 Highlander 3.0L, 2002-2003 Camry 2.4L, 1999-2003 Lexus RX300 and 1999-2002 Lexus ES300, among other models using this transmission.
The rubber on these pistons is bonded straight to the steel, so the seal cannot be replaced by itself. After years of heat the rubber hardens and cracks, and the clutch packs lose apply pressure. On the road that shows up as slipping on the 2-3 or 3-4 shift, flare on a hot upshift, or delayed engagement once the fluid is warm. A soft kit without pistons will not fix it.
During teardown, compare each old piston to the new ones for diameter and bonded lip profile before you assemble a drum. Lube the lips with assembly gel or ATF, use a piston installer or feeler tool to work the lip past the snap ring groove without rolling it, and air check each clutch before the unit goes back together.
