Full synthetic DEXRON VI ATF built to dissolve existing clutch and valve body deposits; six quarts covers a pan drop and filter change.
This is Valvoline's DEXRON VI automatic transmission fluid with the additive package they call Active Dissolve Technology, which Valvoline states removes up to 97 percent of deposits already in the unit. The practical reason that matters on the bench: varnish on valve body bores and on the accumulator and shift valves is what turns a healthy unit into one with a lazy 1-2 or a shudder at light throttle, and a fluid that carries deposits out with it does work that a straight drain-and-fill with a basic fluid will not. It is a full synthetic, so it holds viscosity under the heat a truck or tow rig puts through a cooler.
The licensing covers DEXRON VI, DEXRON III, DEXRON II, MERCON LV, and JASO M315-2013 1A-LV. That makes it the correct fill for GM 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E, 4L80E, 4L85E, 6L80, and 6L90 units, and GM backspecced DEXRON VI for the older DEXRON III applications, so it also covers 700-R4, TH350, TH400, and 200-4R rebuilds. On the Ford side the MERCON LV license puts it in 6R60, 6R75, 6R80, and 10R80 units. It is not a CVT fluid and it is not a dual clutch fluid - do not put it in either.
Six quarts is sized for the service most people actually do. Dropping the pan on a 4L60E and changing the filter takes roughly five quarts back, because the converter and cooler hold the rest and do not drain. A dry fill on that same unit with the converter empty runs closer to eleven or twelve quarts, so plan on two cases if the transmission is out of the vehicle. Fill through the dipstick tube, run the selector through every range with the engine idling, then set the level with the fluid at operating temperature - checking a 4L60E cold will read low and tempt you into overfilling it.
