5R55W/5R55S Transmission Filter and Pan Gasket Kit

This is a filter and pan gasket service kit for the Ford 5R55W and 5R55S five-speed automatics. You get the internal pickup filter with its integrated intake neck and the 16-bolt perimeter oil pan gasket, so you have both pieces the pan needs when you drop it for a fluid and filter service. It replaces Ford part number 1L2Z-7A098-AC and interchanges as FT-140.

It fits the 2002-2010 Ford Explorer (4.0L V6 and 4.6L V8), the 2002-2010 Mercury Mountaineer, the 2007-2010 Explorer Sport Trac, and the 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, in RWD, 4WD and AWD. The one thing to confirm before you buy is the pan bolt count: this kit is for the 16-bolt pan only. Count the bolts on your pan, because the 5R55N and earlier 4-speed units use a different flange and this gasket will not seal them.

On the bench this goes in during a routine fluid and filter change or as part of a valve body job. Drop the pan, let it drain, and pull the old filter straight down off the pump pickup bore. Clean the pan flange and the case flange down to bare metal so the new gasket seats flat, seat the new filter with a light film of ATF on the seal neck, then set the pan with the fresh 16-bolt gasket and run the bolts down in a crisscross pattern to spec rather than cranking them tight. The pan on these traps a lot of clutch material, so a clean filter and a proper reseal is the cheapest insurance against a slipping or hunting 5R55W.

These transmissions are known for delayed engagement and slipping when the fluid gets dirty and the filter starts to draw air, so a filter and gasket at every fluid service keeps the pump feeding clean fluid and the pan sealed.
