Billet accumulator pistons, PTFE seals and a thicker steel accumulator plate that fix scuffed bores and plate flex in 68RFE valve bodies.
The accumulator pistons in the RFE-family valve body are the first thing to give up. The factory plastic pistons wear a step into the aluminum bore, the seal drags, and pressure bleeds off during the shift. You feel it as a soft or flaring 1-2 and 2-3, a delayed engagement when the truck is cold, and eventually solenoid performance codes that have nothing to do with the solenoids. The stamped OEM accumulator plate makes it worse - it flexes under line pressure, backs the screws out, and lets the pistons cock in their bores.
This kit replaces the whole accumulator stack: 5 billet aluminum pistons, 10 PTFE solid guide seals, 5 PTFE scarf-cut seals, one reinforced steel accumulator plate, one shim, 6 screws and 6 washers. The pistons run dual guide seals so the piston cannot side-load and scuff the bore, and the seal is repositioned lower on the piston - that is the part that matters if your bores are already worn, because the seal rides on unworn bore surface and the valve body is saved instead of replaced. The plate is thicker than stock and carries 3 extra mounting holes so the screws stay put.
Fits 45RFE, 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE and 68RFE automatic transmissions, 1999 and newer - the 68RFE behind the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500/3500, the 545RFE and 65RFE in Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the 45RFE in the earlier Dakota and Durango. Verify which RFE unit your truck has before ordering; the family shares the accumulator layout but not every other part.
On the bench the job is straightforward: drop the pan, pull the filter, unbolt the valve body, and lay it flat. Remove the six screws holding the factory accumulator plate, lift the plate off, and the pistons and springs come out with it - keep the springs in order, they are not interchangeable. Clean the bores and inspect them; light scuffing is fine with this kit. Lube the new PTFE seals with clean ATF, walk each piston into its bore by hand, set the springs, drop the reinforced plate with the shim, and torque the screws evenly in a cross pattern. Do not run it up with an impact - these threads are in aluminum.
