Replaces the shudder-causing regulator valve and springs in a GM 8L90 valve body, curing torque converter shudder and the 1-2 clunk on 8L45 and 8L90 units.
This is the Superior STL-8L90 valve body correction kit for the GM 8L90 and 8L45 eight-speed. The shudder those units are known for is not always the converter. GM 8L valve bodies run a regulator valve and spring arrangement that loses control of TCC apply pressure as the bore wears, and the result is the low-speed vibration owners describe as driving over rumble strips at 35 to 45 mph. The same wear pattern cracks valve bodies and puts a hard clunk in the 1-2 shift and in reverse engagement after the truck sits.
The kit swaps in heavier engineered valves and springs at the problem location and includes the drill bit needed to open one passage during the install. Parts in the kit are noticeably heavier than the OE pieces they replace, which is the point: the OE parts are the ones that wear and break. Instructions are step by step and written for a bench install with the valve body out.
Fitment is 8L45 and 8L90 equipped GM vehicles, 2015 and up, which covers Silverado and Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Escalade, Camaro, CT6 and Corvette depending on year and engine. Manufacturer part number STL-8L90.
Install notes worth knowing before you start: the valve body can come out with the transmission in the vehicle after draining and dropping the pan and filter. The two aluminum bolts holding the oil pump chain cover are torque-to-yield and must be replaced (GM 11548404). You need an E12 socket, and the tapered top usually has to be ground off to get full engagement on the valve body bolts without rounding them. Expect stored codes after unplugging the internal harness; clear them on first start. Diagnose before you buy - if the shudder is a genuinely failed converter, no valve body kit will fix it.
