The A340E is the four-speed behind a long list of Toyota trucks and SUVs (4Runner, Tacoma, T100, Land Cruiser, Supra) and Lexus RWD cars. When these pumps wear, the gear pocket and cover face score from debris after a clutch failure, line pressure drops, and you get slow or slipping engagements when hot, a whine that follows engine speed, and fresh burnt clutches soon after an overhaul. A scored pump body cannot be fixed with a seal kit; the pump has to be replaced.

Bench notes: pull the pump with slide hammers in the two threaded holes, never by prying on the stator shaft. Before installing, lube the gears and the outer O-ring with ATF, check that the converter hub drives the inner gear freely, and torque the pump bolts evenly in a cross pattern. Set end play before closing up the case. Flush or replace the cooler and lines, since debris left in the cooler is what kills a new pump.
